Press Releases Multi Stakeholder Wildfire Preparedness Drill Held Ahead of Potential Prolonged Dry Season

Lahat, 6 May 2026 – In anticipation of the potential dry season in 2026, PT Sawit Mas Sejahtera (PT SMS), one of the subsidiaries of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, initiated a Forest, Land, and Plantation Fire Preparedness Roll Call in Lahat, South Sumatra. The activity also involved PT Prisma Cipta Mandiri (PT PCM) and PT Bumi Sawit Permai (PT BSP), which are also subsidiaries of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, along with various stakeholders.

The activity forms part of the company’s efforts to strengthen preparedness and cross sector collaboration in preventing forest, land, and plantation fires, particularly in areas surrounding its operations.

Based on forecasts from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the 2026 dry season is expected to last from May to October. These conditions require collective anticipation as they may increase the risk of fires, particularly if the dry season extends longer than expected. Therefore, early preventive measures are considered essential.

The preparedness roll call involved various stakeholders, including relevant government agencies, the police, the military, and representatives from villages surrounding the company’s operational areas. A total of 90 firefighting personnel from PT SMS, PT PCM, and PT BSP also participated in the activity.

During the event, participants not only attended the preparedness roll call but also took part in fire prevention and response simulations. The simulation aimed to ensure personnel readiness, equipment preparedness, and field coordination in responding to potential fire incidents.

The activity also included the signing of a joint commitment on forest and land fire prevention by company management and related stakeholders. The signing symbolised a shared commitment to strengthening prevention efforts, early detection, and rapid response to potential fires within and around the company’s operational areas.

“Preventing forest, land, and plantation fires requires collective preparedness. Through this preparedness roll call, we want to ensure that all teams have strong understanding, personnel readiness, and coordination in facing the potential dry season. We are also committed to continuously implementing fire prevention measures in accordance with applicable regulations, including through early detection, patrols, infrastructure preparedness, and collaboration with government institutions, security authorities, and surrounding communities,” said Agus Suharto, Regional Controller of PSM 2 Region Sumsel 2.

Through this activity, efforts to prevent and control forest, land, and plantation fires are expected to become more effective through strong collaboration between companies, government institutions, security authorities, and surrounding communities.

The activity is also expected to serve as an important foundation in building a more coordinated preparedness system, helping minimise fire risks during the dry season while safeguarding the surrounding environment in operational areas.
