JAKARTA, 1 April 2010 – PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology Tbk (“SMART”) has appointed Control Union Certification (“CUC”) and BSI Group (“BSI”), two of the world’s leading certification bodies, to conduct a thorough verification of the recent Greenpeace reports relating to sustainable palm oil production. Both organizations are Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”) approved certification bodies. The two agencies have been jointly appointed, following consultation with Unilever, who currently chairs the RSPO.
The appointment of CUC and BSI would ensure clarity through independent, scientifically sound and certified methods of verification of the issues raised in the Greenpeace reports.
“This verification goes beyond the need to verify the claims made by Greenpeace. It clearly demonstrates not only our commitment to the sustainable production of palm oil, but also our role in providing much needed employment and contributing to the growth of the Indonesian economy,” stated Daud Dharsono, SMART’s President Director.
Dharsono added, “We are constantly reviewing our best practices as part of our absolute commitment towards sustainable palm oil production. Early in February, we announced that we would enhance our processes to ensure that we do not develop land with high carbon stock and high conservation value. This assures all stakeholders of our continuing commitment to preserve the primary forests, peat land and high biodiversity.”
As the leading Indonesian palm oil producer, SMART complies with all RSPO principles and criteria on sustainable palm oil production as well as complying with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Indonesia and the international conventions that the government has ratified.
