24 September 2020 – PT Tapian Nadenggan, a palm oil-based company operating in Central Kalimantan, and a subsidiary of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, calls/is pushing for a safe investment environment, to enable it and other companies in Central Kalimantan to operately safely.
Recently, the company faced disruptions, and surrounding communities were fearful, after 20 people blockaded the company’s operation, as part of a land dispute demonstration.
The disputed land has obtained Hak Guna Usaha (Land Use Permit) since 2005 and the area has gone through verifications and an audit process to obtain this permit, which includes giving land compensation to the community with legitimate claims. PT TN has also gone through a series of auditing processes to be RSPO and ISPO certified, both certifications assess legal permits for operation.
Despite the company having clear evidence of its legal right to operate, since 2017 the company has been willing to undertake a mediation process to address the grievance raised. Throughout this time, PT TN has been open and cooperative.
In 2018, PT TN supported the local district effort to conduct another verification of the claim. In 2019 – that verification, from the local government team, found that the land claim from Suhardi and his group was not valid.
We are open to constructive feedback. We will also continue to push for mediation processes when it is still applicable. However, we also want to push for a safe investment environment for our and other companies in Central Kalimantan to operate safely.
Our key focus is to ensure business continuity in all of our operations, especially to provide food for the Indonesian people; and to continue providing income and jobs to more than 170,000 employees around Indonesia.
