We often enjoy our meals without thinking about the effort that goes into them. But behind every bite, there are numerous people working to make sure that the food we eat is not only delicious, but also safe, accessible, and of the highest quality.
This World Food Day on 16 October is a moment to recognise those who make this possible.
From the first inspection at the mill to the final touch in the kitchen, it’s about people who ensure what reaches our table is the best and safest it can be.
Guardians of the harvest
How does the journey of safe, high-quality palm oil begin?
Meet Roy Hutagaol, KCP Section Head at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, who has been the first line of defence in safeguarding quality for over 12 years. From the moment Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFBs) arrive at the mill, Roy’s attention to details enables only the best to make it through.
Every day, Roy inspects FFBs with a keen eye. He looks at critical quality indicators for producing high-quality Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO) – dirt content, moisture levels, and oil content. Roy and his team use a metal trap system to catch impurities like iron before the kernels enter production.
His work goes beyond inspection. He collaborates closely with the Production Planning and Inventory Control (PPIC) team, matching up their quality priorities and making sure the freshest materials are processed first. They follow the FIFO (First In, First Out) system to keep everything in check.

“For me, it’s all about precision,” Roy says. “With the advanced tools we have, we can carefully sample raw materials and keep a close watch on the production process right from the start.
”When asked what safe and nutritious food means to him, Roy reflects, “It’s about keeping the quality we aim for from the start to finish. The FFBs we process are the foundation for so many products that end up on tables and in kitchens around the world, so setting the stage right with these ingredients is crucial. That’s the responsibility I take to heart – to deliver nothing but the best.”
Refining with care, safety we share
When you cook a meal for your family, you want to know that every ingredient is safe and wholesome. For Relvi Hotmaria, that’s her mission. As the Quality Assurance Section Head at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, Relvi monitors that every drop of oil that leaves the refinery is something she would confidently serve to her own loved ones.
Relvi’s journey with Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food began over a decade ago. Drawn by our commitment to personal growth, she joined through the Business Management Development Programme (BMDP) and quickly found her passion in the Quality Food Safety (QFS) department. “Knowing that our products reach families all over the world makes me want to give my best, every single day.”
“We’re hands on with every step – from selecting suppliers to maintaining our equipment, we’re always checking and double-checking everything. It’s more than just meeting expectations—we’re here to surpass them.”
“Over my time at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, I’ve seen how we’ve continuously improved our food safety practices – like digitising laboratory processes and adopting new technologies such as automatic FFB sampling, which have made our quality checks more accurate and efficient,” Relvi adds.
The Collaborative Quality Programme (CQP) has been a huge part of those improvements. “It’s a great initiative because it brings employees from different levels together to figure out new ways to innovate and improve our quality practices. The participants are all involved in finding solutions, which really helps us keep raising the bar on quality.”
So, what does a food secure world mean to Relvi? “To me, it means peace of mind. It’s knowing that when a parent serves a meal to their children, they can trust that every bite is free from harm and good for their loved ones. That’s the kind of impact I want to have – where every family trusts the food they’re putting on the table,” she says with conviction.
From raw to ready
The fields provide the bounty, but it’s on the production floor where these resources are transformed into the products we rely on daily.
Djoviantina, or Jovi as she is known, is behind this transformation. As the Department Head for margarine, shortening, frying fat, and cooking oil, she has spent over 27 years ensuring every transformation from raw ingredient to food runs flawlessly.
Beside managing production, she joins forces with departments like procurement, engineering, and quality control for smooth coordination across the board. “We work in sync,” Jovi says. “If one part in our well-oiled machine falters, the entire process is affected, which is why communication and teamwork are important.”
One of Jovi’s standout moments was leading the expansion of our pastry fat line. “Pastry fat has very specific needs when it comes to texture and stability,’ she explains. “It wasn’t easy, but figuring out how to increase output without losing quality is what makes my job exciting. Another thing I enjoy is introducing lab-developed techniques like interesterification into full-scale production. Interesterification modifies the physical and chemical properties of palm oil. This allows us to create new, customised nutritional profiles that meet the specific needs of our clients, without compromising on safety or quality.”
“Palm is one of the most affordable and accessible oils in the world – it grows relatively quickly, is easy to harvest, and is incredibly productive. That makes it a great option to feed the world,” says Jovi. “It’s our job to turn the high-quality oil we get from our mills and refineries into nutritious and safe foods – because our consumers deserve nothing less. Every member of our team shares this responsibility; It’s pretty much a culture. Tapping on new and innovative methods to produce tons of food for millions of consumers makes us proud of what we do here,” she says with pride.
Ensuring every dish is safe and rich
When you think about the perfect meal, it’s not just about taste – it’s about the love and care that go into every ingredient. For Jo Kim Gwan, or Chef Garry, as he’s known, this philosophy drives everything he does in the kitchen. For over 21 years at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, Chef Garry has been the heart and soul behind many delicious and safe foods that find their way to the table across Indonesia.
Chef Garry’s passion for baking began at a young age, and it has only grown stronger over the years. After studying Baking Science and Technology, he found his home at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, where he could realise his love for creating food that is both tasty and safe to eat. He has become a key figure in our Technical Services team and an in-house chef for Smartpluspro, our channel for industrial and consumer products.
His responsibilities go beyond simply baking; he’s involved in every step of the process, from selecting the freshest ingredients to balancing the nutrition value of recipes. He’s also a mentor, guiding customers and consumers in baking demonstrations and teaching them how to create delicious and healthy dishes using our products. “I’ve always believed that food is more than just fuel – it’s an experience,” he shares. “And it’s my job to make sure that experience is both delightful and safe, so people can enjoy the food without worry,” he explains.
For Chef Garry, food is all about trust. “We want to create something people can feel good about eating – good at taste, nutrition, quality, and hygiene. When someone enjoys what we’ve made, they should have confidence that it’s good for them too,” he shares.
Sharing the same passion for safe and delicious food to the world
This year’s World Food Day theme “right to foods for a better life and a better future”, aligns with what we strive at Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food. It’s a reminder that our work goes beyond just providing food – we want to ensure that everyone has access to safe, nutritious, affordable and accessible foods. What we do today helps build healthier lives and a better future for everyone.
